People seriously decorate for the holidays in the Northwest. It gets dark around 4:30, so it's understandable and makes the winter a lot more cheery. Thank you, decorators.
Mostly they're ignored, but think how bleak the shopping experience would be without them. Planted in orderly rows, surrounded by asphalt and automobile exhaust, the parking lot trees are our best defense against blight, glaring sun, and architectural depression.
We have a "spooky house" down the street. Not one of those abandoned-looking places with people actually living there (truly spooky), but a really over-the-top Halloween display showcase from roof to sidewalk. These photos don't do it justice because the home-owners just keep adding more gravestones, body parts and signage everywhere, but I kind of like this minimalist look better anyway--the first decorations of the season.
These are technically shrubs, but my neighbor shapes them so thoughtfully. I see him out in his yard sometimes with his little clippers, which I believe run on battery power. They sound like this: rrrrrrrrrrrrrr! Not too noisy. He trims all the little branches that stick out on the dinosaurs and the dragon that look like "fur" until they're smooth again. The big eye on the dragon is a nice touch. He also has a shrub tea set. That's for next time.
